Home builders group says Wakulla Springs plan needs more time

A state plan to clean up Wakulla Springs might not go into effect Friday as planned.

The Florida Homebuilders Association has requested the Department of Environmental Protection delay new rules to reduce the flow of nitrates into the world-famous spring south of Tallahassee.

DEP released Basin Management Action Plans June 29 for 24 north and central Florida springs plagued with an explosion of algae and hydrilla fed by nitrates from fertilizers used on farms and in cities, and wastewater from septic tanks.

The plans were due July 1 and environmentalists and the FHBA say the late release provided little time to study the proposals. The challenge period...
